Throughout my life, I don't think i would be able to name a single artist who has affected/shaped me as a person as powerfully or as meaningfully as Richard David James. I don't really think it's an understatement to say i wouldn't truly be the person i am today without the art he's created over the past 30-odd years keeping me company throughout all of it.

There's something funny about looking back at a minuscule seeming event and realizing in retrospect how eventful and important it actually was on a grand scale, and it just goes to show how truly life changing some art can be on a person. I guess since this is sorta my introduction to everything, it would only make sense to go through the discography of one of my favorite artists as my first post, give my thoughts on them and look at them as a piece of formative electronic music history.My Experience With Aphex Twin. 2014 was a pretty uneventful year in my life, as far as i can remember, which isn't really saying much considering i was a fresh-faced young boy still in Middle School.

If you were to ask me one on one what exactly happened education wise, I really can't say i would be able to recall much of my middle school experience. And why should i be expected to? I'm willing to bet money that most of you reading this fucking despised your middle school years and look back at the person you were and wince at some of the silly things you said and did with your friends. In a way these were the true end years of innocence for many, a segue into the scary world of puberty, high school, and becoming an adult.

So what does this all have to do with Aphex Twin? Well, in 2014 a lot of interesting things regarding Aphex were going on. His twitter account had tweeted out a to a website containing information on his soon to be newest studio album, Syro. This marked the end of a 10+ year hiatus from making music under this moniker, instead choosing to lay low and release music under pseudonyms on his now-defunct Rephlex label for those ten odd years.

And who could really blame him for that? The 90's had been a completely crazy and life changing time for Richard, going from a kid making music in his bedroom to one of Electronic music's strangest newcomers.

The expectations were mounting extremely heavily on him to put out something new and genre defying, as he had done many many times throughout the years. Bmw g650x repair manual. That isn't to say he cared about what Rolling Stone, an ironically irrelevant news outlet, or any other music reviewers had to say about what he was putting out, but after years and years of releasing completely genre defining music, Richard felt as if it was time for a bit of a hiatus. Within this time period, he released an entire 11 EP series known as 'Analord', And two EPs under the name 'The Tuss'.

Everyone still had their eyes on what Richard was going to do next under the Aphex Twin name, which had long been what he reserved his best work for. After years and years of waiting for anything new from Richard, Finally news had surfaced along with a single. This is how i found him. Not only was the Onion link something talked about, an even larger publicity stunt was pulled before that in which a massive Aphex Twin Blimp (yes, really) had been spotted flying over london, with the numbers '2014' written on the side. As you can imagine, This sent everyone into a frenzy. Richard was making his return to the name which sparked so many beautiful and important records to Electronic music.

This is where i came into the picture, i had heard so much about these publicity stunts i decided to check out the single which was released and it completely blew me away. I had never heard anything like it before. Of course i listened to electronic music (mostly EDM) but this was completely different. The melodic structure and layers of instrumentation was unlike anything else i had ever heard in my life and it was a completely life changing experience. I had to have listened to that track at least 20+ times that very night. Around a week later, Syro became the first album i had ever preordered, and the rest is history.

You see, giving context to my Aphex Twin discovery is important mostly because it gives an insight to the fact that not only was i young (as hell) but i hadn't ever heard any music like it before, so everything was completely new to me. In a way, his music was a bit of a formal introduction into the world of music for me. I hadn't ever sat down and listened to a full album until Syro came out and i literally could not stop, that's how powerful of a grasp this record had on me when i first heard it. I would spend hours with it on repeat, analyzing just what made each track so enchanting.

From the very first pads of the warm thudding Xtal, it's incredibly apparent you're in for a treat. The composition of this track is something to behold. The droning vocals mix almost perfectly with the synths and drum samples. Everything really comes together here and for the rest of the album the same flavor is kept: the warm synth sounds coupled with drum breaks and distorted/wonky vocal samples make for an incredibly engaging listen. This has to be one of my favorite releases by Richard just because i feel as though it's one of his most consistent as well as important, influence wise. In my opinion this is Richards weakest studio album. It's not bad by any means, it simply pales in comparison to albums that would come after and treads a lot of the same territory as albums that came before it.

Some of Richards best work is here (Mookid, Come On You Slags!, Cow Cud is a Twin, Alberto Balsalm) but a lot of the tracks on here feel quite mediocre and not as well thought out as the others. The two EPs birthed from the sessions of this record, Ventolin and Donkey Rhubarb, are interesting in their own rights. Now for what i consider to be the magnum opus of his creativity, Richard pulled all the stops out on this one completely and decided to make this album a mishmash of completely different genres. Many of these tracks are prepared piano pieces coupled with mad breakcore tracks, the track listing chose seemingly at random, but it's really something how well these tracks compliment one another.

Highlights include a birthday call from his parents recorded straight from his answering machine ('i hope your card came'), the nightmarish Gwarek2, Mt St Micheal (one of his most impressive tracks to date), and so on. There are too many good tracks here to really choose a handful, It's just a beautiful and intense cacophony of electronic music, a testament to Richard's composition genius. Even though earlier in this post that Syro completely changed my life, after taking the rose colored glasses off (er, in this case. Lime colored) I feel this album comfortably sits behind Drukqs and in front of Rushup Edge (but only just slightly) in my 'favorite aphex twin' album list.

This album is mastered exceedingly well and sounds absoltely jaw dropping. Not only is it Richards best sounding album dynamics wise but it also kicks complete ass regarding the tracks themselves. 4 Bit Api, for example is just layered with amazing and wonderful melodies, simple yet complex, enough layers that you notice something new on every listen of this fantastic record.
